A retreat can be one of the best decisions of the year – or an expensive misunderstanding. Whether it's yoga, meditation, fasting, a sound journey or a few days of silence: the difference rarely lies in the offer itself, but in whether it suits you. These seven questions help you gain clarity before you book.
1. What am I actually looking for?
Rest, movement, new inspiration, community or a conscious break from everyday life? The direction makes a big difference:
- Time Out & Stillness, if you mainly want to switch off and find calm.
- Yoga, if you want to get your body and breath moving and find your inner center.
- Meditation & Mindfulness, if you want to learn to deal more consciously with thoughts and stress.
- Sound Healing, if singing bowls, special music experiences or sound journeys appeal to you.
- Detox & Fasting, if you want to consciously give your diet and your body a break.
- Wellness & Health, if relaxation, self-care and well-being are your priority.
Put into one sentence what you want to take away. That sentence is your best filter.
2. How much time do I really have – and where?
A weekend can do a surprising amount, especially when the retreat is nearby. For long-distance destinations, one to two weeks are more worthwhile, so that travel and jet lag don't eat up most of the recovery. If you don't have time for a retreat right now, an online course can be a good start that fits into your daily life. After a retreat, also plan a quiet day once you're back home.
3. Does the retreat match my level and needs?
Many offers are aimed at beginners and experienced participants alike – that works well when the facilitators respond to the different levels. You'll find this information on every retreat page. There you can also see the program, the maximum group size, the facilitators' training and how many years of experience they bring. Read the description carefully too: How intensive is the program? How many sessions are there per day? For physically demanding offers or fasting, it may be worth seeking medical advice beforehand if you have health concerns. When in doubt, a quick question to the host always helps.
4. In which language is it led?
You'll find the languages in which events are held on the individual retreat pages. You can also filter by language when searching. With a foreign language, it's important that you understand most of what's said. But experience also shows that there are many ways to communicate. Our tip: don't be shy, listen to your inner voice – and the universe will help you.
5. How big are the groups?
In a small group you get more personal guidance; in a larger one, more exchange and anonymity. Both can be right – what matters is that you know what you're getting into. In a silent retreat, the group also plays a different role than in a sound workshop with group singing. The maximum group size is stated for all events.
6. What's included in the price – and what isn't?
Accommodation, meals, course program, materials, transfers, excursions: the differences are big. Don't just compare the final price, compare the whole package. And check the cancellation policy before you book – plans sometimes change faster than expected.
7. Who leads the offer?
In the end, you spend time with the people who lead the retreat or course. What is their background, what training do they have, how do they describe their work? A personal impression – via the website, a video or a short conversation – often says more than any photo gallery.
And then: just go
No retreat is perfect, and it doesn't have to be. Once you've answered these seven questions for yourself, you're making a conscious decision.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a retreat and an event or course?
A retreat is usually a break lasting several days, often with accommodation and meals in one place. An event or course usually takes place in individual sessions, on site or online, and fits into everyday life.
Is a retreat suitable for beginners?
Yes, many retreats are explicitly aimed at beginners or mixed groups. Look for information on the level in the description and, if in doubt, ask the host directly.
How long should my first retreat be?
A weekend or a long weekend nearby is often a good way to start. That way you get to know the format without spending a lot of travel time and vacation days.
Can I attend a retreat on my own?
Yes, many people travel alone. The group and the shared program make it easy to connect – or to consciously take time for yourself.
